The shortage of fresh produce at Maputo’s Zimpeto wholesale market is worsening day by day. On Friday, the market was practically empty. No trucks arrived, and supplies of tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage and onions had practically dried up.
All that was sold through to the early afternoon was leftovers from previous days, said market administrator Moises Covane, according to whom the last delivery was received on Thursday when three tomato trucks arrived from Catuane in Maputo province, along with four potato and two cabbage consignments.
The market needs at least 30 tomato and 20 to 25 potato deliveries to be fully stocked.
“We are going from bad to worse,” said the administrator, who could only offer the hypothesis that produce coming from South Africa was being purchased further from the border than before.
This is not the first time the wholesale market has faced a crisis like this, but this is the worst Covane has seen it, with days like Thursday when not even one truck rolled in.
Shortages last weekend prompted a slight increase in prices, with a 20 kg box of tomatoes costing 500.00 meticais, potatoes 300.00, and onions from 220.00 to 260.00 meticais.
