The Zimbabwean citizen shot by the Mozambique police on Wednesday (October 19) while allegedly involved in a kidnap attempt in Maputo has died, Folha de Maputo reported on Friday (October 21).
According to Folha de Maputo, the alleged abductor, hospitalised at a healthcare facility in the capital. succumbed to injuries incurred during an exchange of fire with the PRM.
The Zimbabwean was one of a gang of four who tried to kidnap a citizen whose identity is still not established at around 9:00 PM on Wednesday.
One other member of the gang died when the vehicle being used crashed and two fled the scene and are still at large.
Bernadino Rafael, the commander of the Maputo City police, told reporters that at around 20.00 on Wednesday night a gang of four armed men attempted to kidnap a citizen (so far unnamed) on Ahmed Sekou Toure Avenue, in the centre of the city, AIM had reported on Friday (October 21).
They blocked their victim’s vehicle, but the police intervened and aborted the kidnap attempt. In the ensuing car chase, the kidnappers drove the wrong way up a one way street, pursued by the police. When they reached Agostinho Neto Avenue, near Maputo Central Hospital, the driver lost control and the car crashed into the wall of a crèche. The car caught fire, and the driver was burnt to a cinder.
The other three escaped from the burning vehicle and exchanged shots with the police. When reporters arrived, they saw bloodstains and spent cartridges on the ground near the burnt-out car.
Eye-witnesses said the shoot-out lasted 15 to 20 minutes. Two of the gang escaped but a third was injured. The police detained him, and took him for medical treatment at the Central Hospital. Rafael said the injured man was a Zimbabwean who had been involved in previous kidnappings.
