Mozambique: Vaccine rejection threatens polio immunization of 680,000 children, Gaza Governor warns
Zimbabwe has stepped up efforts to guard against the vicious Zika virus, a mosquito transmitted disease which can result in birth defects, through fumigation programmes across the country.
Although the mosquito that transmits the virus is not found in Zimbabwe, Health minister David Parirenyatwa said the possibility of the mosquito coming to the country could not be ruled out, as it was found on the country’s borders with Mozambique.
As it is, three out of the country’s 10 provinces have been sprayed to eradicate mosquitoes.
The Zika virus has become a global health threat, as experts fear its spread.
“What is important to know is that the Zika virus comes in through the mosquito and, fortunately, the mosquito that is there does not transmit the Zika virus. But we cannot rule it out because along our borders with Mozambique that species are there. The idea is always to spray indoors,” Parirenyatwa said.
