Zim cop in hot water for calling Mugabe ‘old’

A Zimbabwean police officer has found himself in hot water over allegations that he called President Robert Mugabe an “old man”, New Zimbabwe.com has reported.

Thompson Joseph Mloyi, a 44-year-old police officer, appeared before a magistrate on charges related to the undermining of authority of, or insulting, the president.

Mloyi, who is also accused of calling First Lady Grace Mugabe a prostitute, was not asked to plead in court and was instead slapped with a $100 bail charge.

Allegations against Mloyi arose on Saturday when he entered a barrack and started shouting: “President Mugabe is too old to rule and is married to a prostitute.”

When confronted, Mloyi reportedly stormed out of the room, after which he was reported to officials by witnesses.

The incident came just a few days after a school headmaster was arrested over allegations that he posted satirical images of the Mugabe on social media.

According to a previous News24 report, headmaster Edson Chuwe was arrested along with two of his colleagues for sharing the images, which were described as “belittling” to the southern African leader.

One of the images, which depicted Mugabe being kicked by a white farmer, resulted in the three perpetrators being charged according to section 33(2) b of Zimbabwe’s consitution, which states that any insult to the president is a jailable offence.
