“Some of the beneficiaries of your donation today lost their parents in the ongoing conflict in Cabo Delgado. As Chibuabuara Community, we are very grateful for this gesture and your contribution towards the restoration of peace in our area. You have shown us love and what it means to be a brother’s keeper,” these were the words of Mr Massoud Ibrahim, the Chibuabuara Community Leader, in Pemba, Delgado Province of Mozambique when the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Contingent donated items and spent time with Chibuabuara Community as part of their Christmas celebrations.
Mr Ibrahim was speaking on behalf of recipients of Christmas hampers donated by the Contingent serving in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) on 23 December 2023.
He thanked the Contingent for the work that they were doing in Cabo Delgado adding that they left their homes to assist the people of Pemba in the fight against terrorism and restore peace in their communities.
The hampers contained mealie meal, cooking oil, flour, sugar and other food items as well as football items which included balls, whistles and sets of referee cards.
The donation was made to the elderly, orphans and vulnerable children and the local male and female football teams.
And Zambia’s Country Senior, Lt Col Chibwe Mwila stated that the donation was made in the spirit of Christmas and an expression of “ubuntu” to the community within the Air Force Contingent’s Area of Responsibility (AOR).
He said that the Contingent valued the warm relations which existed between the contingent and the local community, a key partner in the execution of the SAMIM mandate.
And speaking earlier, Contingent Commander, Lt Col Songwe Katuta disclosed that the social interactions with the local community continued to foster peace and unity in Cabo Delgado region.
Lt Col Katuta said the Contingent had organized several football and volleyball events with the local community since its deployment to the area.
The event was punctuated with various traditional dances and music by the local community.
