The Director-General of the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC) has given families at risk in the city of Mocuba 30 days to voluntarily leave their homes and settle permanently in safe areas already identified.
Augusta Maíta says that the authorities will make the move compulsory if families do not comply with the decision, which aimed at safeguarding human lives.
Many families returned to the areas concerned after the 2015 rainy season, despite the obvious dangers.
With forecasts pointing to above-normal rainfall, Maíta set the 30-day deadline and visited the resettlement neighbourhood in Namacurra district to deliver her message in person.
The visit draws to a close the INGC chairperson monitoring work in Zambézia province’s Namacurra, Mocuba and Maganja da Costa districts.
