To make way for the works, as many as 64 families in the Maquival area may lose their homes, and 75.6 hectares of food production also be lost.
Because the project has already been postponed several times, Governor Pio Matos has given assurances that the new Macuse Commercial Port, an investment that could cost up to US$1.05 billion, will be completed in this five-year period.
Pio Matos says that, unlike the coal port initially planned, the commercial port is more versatile, and that a port capable of transporting and receiving products from abroad would boost the development of the province.
Carlos Sousa, production director at the forestry multinational Portucel, is looking forward to the comparative advantage the port will give his firm.
“We are satisfied with this announcement, but we want the project to come off the paper and into reality. We have no doubt that, when completed, the port will boost the province and the country in general.”
The construction of Macuse Commercial Port in Zambézia is being undertaken by Thai Moçambique Logística S.A. (TML).
