The more than 32,000 residents of the administrative posts of Mulela and Nabur are now isolated from the district headquarters village of Pebane, in Zambézia province, due to the collapse of a bridge connecting the three regions.
Pebane district administrator Eduardo Vida confirmed the information to ‘Noticias’ this Friday, saying that the bridge had collapsed as a result of the rain that fell overnight.
Vida describes the infrastructure as strategic for the economy of the district, and of the province of Zambézia in general, since the two administrative posts are substantial producers of cashew nuts, peanuts, fish and wood.
Traffic is seriously constrained, and this could affect assistance to the population in terms of health, education, water and other services, he explained.
Because of Cyclone Gombe, there have been no classes in Quelimane’s schools today. Many educational establishments have closed, though the atmosphere in the Zambezi capital remains calm, with the sky only slightly cloudy.
