A 19-year-old woman has been in police custody at the 10th police station in Maputo’s Xipamanine neighbourhood since Sunday, on suspicion of asphyxiating her six-month-old son.
The crime supposedly occurred at the young woman’s home in the Chamanculo neighbourhood on March 15, but was only discovered by family members on Saturday (20-03), five days after the murder.
The accused, Yumina Edna, says that she wrapped the baby in a capulana and placed him in a plastic bag and then left him in a vacant lot next to the Junta Terminal, explaining that she committed the crime because the baby’s father failed to provide any assistance.
“I killed my son because I was angry. His father did not help me take care of the baby, ”she said. This is denied by the child’s father, 21-year-old Agostinho Mucavele.
Leonel Muchina, spokesman for the Maputo police, said that the law provides for a penalty of 20 to 25 years in prison for this type of crime. He added that the young woman was denounced by family members.
In a different case, four individuals aged between 22 and 31 are being held at the 10th police station in Djonasse neighbourhood, Matola municipality, accused of murdering a 24-year-old man.
The crime allegedly took place in Djonasse, where the victim worked as a security guard. After allegedly murdering the guard and burying his body, the four reportedly entered the house and stole various possessions.
