Mozambique: Cholera infects almost 1,000 in Nampula province since October
During the course of the week 22 to 29 April, 24-year-old Jonito Daniel was found dead in his cell at the Penitenciária Regional Norte de Nampula (Regional Penitentiary in Nampula North).
According to initial reports, Daniel is believed to have been physically assaulted to death by a group of prison guards. Daniel’s body was discovered by fellow inmates on Saturday 30 April, after the deceased attempted to escape the penitentiary, where he was serving a 14 month sentence. Daniel attempted to escape the facility during a power failure.
When the on duty guards realised that he was missing, a massive search was conducted. Daniel was subsequently apprehended at the Coca-Cola factory in Napipine district, approximately six kilometres from the prison.
Daniel was immediately brought back to the penitentiary, where he was allegedly tied up and beaten by the guards before being covered in hot oil and abandoning him in a solitary cell. Prison authorities have yet to comment on the allegations.
