Mozambique: MISA warns of 'alarming setbacks' to press freedom

A 44-year-old citizen died after being violently beaten by two police officers from the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Beira City, while in Quelimane, a PRM agent has assaulted a disabled person.
The deceased, identified as Abdul Razak, was trying to photograph PRM agents enforcing the state of emergency in the Munhava neighbourhood last Sunday (19), where they questioned a group of teenagers playing football.
The young man was beaten and detained at the 4th Precinct Police Station in the Sofala capital. His relatives managed to secure his release, but Razak died on his way to hospital where and was declared dead on arrival of trauma caused by blunt objects.
Meanwhile, a video broadcast by Diário da Zambézia shows a police officer assaulting a disabled citizen in Quelimane city, apparently during an argument about compliance with the state of emergency.
