Frelimo has announced the reconstruction of headquarters buildings vandalised in protests by demonstrators in the districts of Zambézia province. The rehabilitation will be carried out at zero cost by a young Mozambican businessman.
A young businessman in the construction sector Cambo Marqueza, who is a resident of Zambézia province, was recently introduced to the public at a session of the ruling party by the first secretary of Frelimo in Zambézia province, Momade Juízo.
Juízo counted at least six destroyed party district and town headquarters that will benefit from the announced requalification.
“Our district headquarters in Ile, Mocuba, Namacurra, Morrumbala and Alto Molocue were vandalised. As a party, we made an effort and will enter into an agreement with an architectural firm which will include a survey of the damage and the requalification of our real estate assets,” Juízo said.
Cambo Marqueza did not initially want to give DW the details of this agreement with Frelimo, but promised some details in a month.
Frelimo members welcome the initiative
Frelimo member Lucas Varela is pleased with the initiative.
“This idea is very positive. I want to support this citizen who took this initiative. The events we have seen to date are not caused by Frelimo. It is the opposition that is trying to remove Frelimo from its place,” he says.
For Varela, the demonstrations have further impoverished Zambézia residents.
“I am poor, one who struggles every day, I don’t even earn 100 meticais (about €1.42) a day. Before, for me, life was ‘easy’. We had none of those additional confusions of confronting someone,” he bemoans.
Political analyst Laurindo Verde also welcomes Frelimo’s announcement to rebuild its headquarters, but has one caveat.
“Rebuilding the headquarters is very important. It is also a message to the general population that this is an organized party. We could nonetheless say that it is not the right time, but it would also not be better for Frelimo to remain silent about this. But, if it is an opportune time, no, it is not. Because we do not know what the future holds for this country in relation to the demonstrations.”
The demonstrations that culminated in the destruction of buildings, including Frelimo district headquarters, continue in some parts of the province. Recently, there were riots in Chinde, and another Frelimo party headquarters building was vandalized, according to local administrative structures.
