The Xiquitsi project started in March 2013 in its two components: the Classical Music Season of Maputo and the Training of Orchestras and Choirs of Mozambique, both interconnected as all the guest musicians of the Classical Season conducted workshops, lectures and classes to young trainees.
Students not only have access to all the concerts but also have the chance to perform during the season alongside professional musicians. The year of 2016 was very challenging, whith more than 40 concerts, and another 60 sessions of workshops, in addition to daily classes that take place in the Scala Theatre, in Maputo.
This year, Xiquitsi presented the first compositions by students of the composition class, guided by Portuguese composer Daniel Moreira. In May premiered an original composition by Estevão Chissano titled ‘Kyrie’ .August was marked by the premiere of the orchestral version of Gabriel Chiau’s ‘Wene Unga Yali,’, a work from student Jennifer Mahumane, and also the orchestration of the famous Fany Mpfumo’s ‘Elisa Ngomarasaia’, the latter the result of a joint work of Francisco Fumo and Estevão Chissano.
The concert of October 29, at 7h30 PM, will have as special guests singers Xixel Langa, Hortêncio Langa, Willy e Aníbal and Yolanda Kakana, who will mark a historic moment in Mozambican music by interpreting their original works with a Mozambican Orchestra, which is a 100 percent the work of Mozambicans.
On 30 October, at 4 PM, will take place the customary ‘Concert for Parents and Children’. It will be a commented concert where guests of all ages will make a trip around the great classics from Bach, through the Beatles, and landing in Mozambique with the renowned Fany Mpfumo.
Prior to these two concerts on 27 and 28 October, Xiquitsi will visit two Primary Schools, Machava and Skuama, respectively, inserted within the projects’ decentralisation activities, where it takes music to public school, thus promoting classical instruments and their history, as a means to complement the discipline of musical education.
