Maputo City Council yesterday began the reorganisation of Xikheleni market with the removal of vendors from places unsuitable for stalls. There is now access to the area called ‘senta-baixo’, previously clogged with sellers of second-hand clothes fighting for space with cars on the move.
Ramos Marrengula , president of the Association of Operators and Workers of the Informal Sector [AOTSI] says that some sellers have welcomed the reorganisation, while others see themselves as victims of the authorities.
Polana Caniço is one of the destinations on offer to the vendors moved. There are still empty stalls there, and the traders there are eager for others to join them.
Juleca Lejo lives in the Urbanização neighbourhood and does her shopping here. She says she does not shop in inappropriate places, so as not to encourage vendors setting up outside the markets.
The City Council Markets and Fairs Department says the Municipal Police will not abandon the place just because the reorganisation has taken place, but will continue to maintain order.
