One of the greats of Mozambican music, Xidiminguana, turned 80 years old on Wednesday August 3, and to celebrate the occasion, family and friends joined him at his home in Maputo.
Xidiminguana is one of Mozambique’s most cherished and enduring artists. It seems that the artist’s chosen métier is the wellspring of the youth and energy that shines through on stage, even after eight decades of life.
“I feel good because God preserves me still. My hour has not yet come, so I feel good,” said the musician, turning then to listen to his wife, Paulina Honwana.
“I am happy because he is someone who pleases both the audience and me, his wife, and who still supports me with his talent,” she says.
To celebrate his 80th birthday, Xidiminguana is presenting a concert for 12th August in the Eduardo Mondlane University Cultural Centre in Maputo. Xidiminguana will be accompanied by Banda Vuthu Gaza and guests Wazimbo, Aniano Tamele, Feliz Moya, Mr Bow, Neyma, Liloca and stand-up comedian Ring Ring
Victorino Mazuze, one of the concert organizers, says the occasion will be a tribute to the musician and will debut his new album, “Dlawanini”.
Writer of famous songs like “Xikona”, “Frelimo”, “Nilhayisse”, and “Nikhome Nkata” among others, Domingos Honwana was born on August 3, 1936, in Vuthu, in the district of Bilene Macia. He learned to play in 1949 with a guitar made of an Oliveira olive oil can and fishing line purchased with two corn dishes and a kilogram of cashew nuts.
His first song was recorded in the studios of Radio Mozambique, then the Radio Club of Mozambique, in 1964, and has passed the test of time with flying colours. In the course of his long career, he has played with musicians such as Alexandre Langa and José Guimarães, now deceased, and with many others of his generation and later.
Xidiminguana has been playing the guitar for 60 years now, and his way of playing is perhaps best understood as storytelling through the guitar. Today, with more than 20 published albums to his name, the instrument remains his faithful companion.
