Thirty-one Xai-Xai public transport workers city have not been paid for sixteen months.
According to Rádio Moçambique, municipal authorities say they need 8 million meticais to pay the salary arrears, and are awaiting a response to a request submitted to both the provincial and the central governments for funds to solve the problem.
Xai-Xai Mayor Ernesto Chambice said that the solution is to compensate the workforce or reduce its numbers so that the executive can guarantee payment of salaries.
“The solution now is for the municipality to declare the company bankrupt, authorise the creation of another, smaller company, and the workers can be compensated because it is a debt,” Chambice said .
