Hippos perambulating at night on the banks of the Limpopo River in Xai-Xai, Gaza province, are causing panic among the population.
Residents say the hippos wander about their properties at the dead of night in herds of four to six animals, and even sometimes during the day.
Our interviewees say that, in addition to disconcerting residents, the animals are destroying crops in their fields, especially maize and vegetables.
President of Xai-Xai Municipal Council, Emídio Xavier, says that the local government is, in tandem with the provincial directorate of Land and Environment, studying ways to limit the animals’ movements.
