A process of assessing the activities of forestry operators is underway in Sofala starts today (Tuesday) and aims to improve the regulation of Mozambique’s forestry sector.
The WWF/World Bank-supported operation intends to prevent the illegal export of timber and assess how forest resources have been exploited, with a view to seeing if the legal instruments governing the process are being met.
The evaluation will consist of inspecting operators’ documentation and overseeing the technical behaviour of operators.
Paulo Feniasse says that prosecutions on their own are not enough to stop unregulated logging, and the government must raise awareness among forestry operators with activities like that which begins today.
A similar operation carried out about two years ago identified many irregularities among forestry operators and led to the cancellation of about half the operators’ licenses in Sofala, leaving only 64.
