The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, on Wednesday saluted all those young people who “give their lives in defence of the people”, fighting armed groups in the centre and north of the country in defence of sovereignty.
“We salute young people in the service of the Defence and Security Forces who give everything, including their lives, in defence of national sovereignty and of the people, in the face of attacks by terrorists and armed men in the north and centre of the country,” Filipe Nyusi said in a message from the Presidency of the Republic on the occasion of International Youth Day.
In some parts of northern and central Mozambique, specifically Cabo Delgado, Sofala and Manica provinces, armed groups have carried out attacks against civilian vehicles, authorities and villages.
In Cabo Delgado, attacks by armed groups, which broke out in 2017, have already killed at least 1,000 people, with some of the actions claimed by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group.
According to the United Nations, armed violence in Cabo Delgado has forced 250,000 people to flee from districts affected by insecurity in the north of the province.
In the centre of the country, armed incursions attributed to a Renamo splinter group have since August 2019 targeted security forces and civilians in villages and on some road sections in the region, killing 24 people and injuring several others, in addition to destroying vehicles.
This year, World Youth Day is celebrated under the motto “Youth Engagement for Global Action”, and aims to promote the inclusion and participation of young people in all spheres of life.
In addition to those who fight armed violence, the head of state encouraged young Mozambicans to “emerge as true entrepreneurs and agents of transformation” in support of the country’s development.
“We encourage young Mozambicans to engage in the prevention of Covid-19, HIV and AIDS and other diseases that weaken our efforts towards sustainable development,” President Nyusi said.
World Youth Day was instituted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1999.
