At least 600 Mozambicans will participate in the 2023 World Youth Day (WYD)in Lisbon, Portugal, from 1 to 6 August 2023, authorities announced on Monday.
“Mozambique has 600 young people who will take part in this world event. Not all of them will depart from our country; some who are abroad have signed up for it, and we will meet them there,” said Father Simião Muchanga , speaking in Maputo. at a meeting with the Secretary of State of Youth and Employment, Osvaldo Petersburgo..
Of the total number of Mozambicans registered for WYD Lisbon 2023, 400 will depart from Mozambique and the remaining 200 from other parts of the world, including Portugal itself.
Osvaldo Petersburgo, Secretary of State for Youth and Employment of Mozambique, wants those attending to take the country’s “rich experience” in promoting peace, unity and fraternity to the event, noting that this is the first time that so many young Mozambicans have participated in the WYD.
“Promote the good name of Mozambique and also promote our flag,” Osvaldo Petersburgo urged.
For 20-year-old Marcela Mabunda, this will also be an opportunity to exchange experiences with other young people from around the world.
“We are going to show the world that we exist […] and that, above all, we are all Church, whether in Africa, Europe or Asia. The Church is one and this unity of the children of God is what attracts me the most,” stressed Marcela, who will participate for the first time as a WYD volunteer.
“We hope that in the coming years Mozambique will also be able to host the day,” Father Muchanga added.
Lisbon was chosen by Pope Francis to host this edition of World Youth Day, with the main ceremonies taking place in Parque Eduardo VII and Parque Tejo, north of Parque das Nações, on the bank riverside of the Tagus.
WYD was born on the initiative of Pope John Paul II, following on from the success of a 1985 International Year of Youth meeting in Rome.
Pope Francis became the first person to register for WYD Lisbon 2023, after celebrating the Angelus at the Vatican on October 23, 2022.
The theme of WYD 2023, which will take place Aug. 1–6, is “Mary arose and went with haste.” Lisbon will mark Pope Francis’ fourth time attending the international youth gathering, which was established by Pope John Paul II in 1985.
