Mozambique was awarded the gold medal at the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students, which closed on Sunday, October 21, in the Russian city of Sochi. The young Milton Valente received the medal from President Vladimir Putin in a symbolic act widely applauded and broadcast on global television.
Valente dedicated the medal to President Filipe Nyusi and the Mozambican people. The young man then attended a private dinner in the company of 20 others from the five continents of the world at which Vladimir Putin was present.
Representing Africa along with two other young people from Tanzania and Nigeria, Valente spoke to the Russian president and gave him a breastplate bearing the Mozambican flag.
The XIX World Festival of Youth and Students, which brought together 28,000 young people from 146 countries, was a moment of celebration and exchange of experience for youth. By highlighting the festival in this political and diplomatic field, Mozambique marked the history of its participation in this type of world-class events.
Mozambique sent a 92-strong delegation including artists, politicians, entrepreneurs and public officials. Delegation members participated in debates and presented Mozambican songs and dance, resulting in the establishment of many new business partnerships and friendships.
