World Bank regional director Taufila Nyamadzabo has stressed the urgency of addressing the sanitation problems which have long affected some of Maputo’s peripheral neighbourhoods.rts.
Taufila Nyamadzabo spoke to ‘O País’ after visiting Chamanculo, Xipamanine, KaTembe and Avenues 25 de Setembro and 10 de Novembro in downtown Maputo.
Nyamadzabo said he was visiting a day after heavy rainfall in the city and province of Maputo on purpose, “to find out about the real problems of the city”.
Nyamadzabo saw flooded roads and alleys in Xipamanine and Chamanculo almost impassable due to rainwater. The absence of any coherent urban planning also caught the eye of the World Bank’s regional director.
“There is still a lot to be done to reduce the level of flooding in Maputo, especially in these neighbourhoods,” Nyamadzabo said. “Many challenges remain.”
Mozambique received US$100 million from the World Bank last December as part of a project to restructure the city of Maputo. Part of this amount is to be used to build a drainage system.
“I hope that, within two years, Maputo will overcome its flooding problems. Action in this direction is urgently needed,” Nyamadzabo emphasised, adding that it is up to the government and the municipality to define priority neighbourhoods.
Representing the Mayor of Maputo, Eduardo Nguenha said that reconstruction had already started, and further studies that would culminate in field work were underway.
Nguenha also said that it was still necessary to install basic infrastructures such as water, electricity and access roads in KaTembe Municipal District, so that residents could enjoy a decent standard of living.
