President of the INE Rosario Fernandes has acknowledged the concerns of striking census workers who demanded an improvement in working conditions and assured them that their problems would be solved.
“We verified the complaints presented by the group and, as a matter of fact, they do good cause. The Directorate of Administration and Finance had already sent the money, but it had not reached the recipients. We took action and everything is taken care of,” Fernandes said.
Following the claims, which were resolved on Friday, a technical team to monitor the process was created in Maputo, resulting in the suspension of the census finance manager.

The document read at the conciliation meeting between the enumerators and the INE covered four points. These were the creation of a commission to coordinate the census process of the Fourth General Census of Population and Housing in Maput; the appointment of DIC director, Cirilo Eduardo Tembe, to coordinate the commission; the appointment of Dr. Mabjaia, deputy director of the Human Resources Administration of INE as deputy head of the commission; and the temporary suspension of the head of the Department of Administration and Finance of INE of Maputo City, Dr. Luís Januário Muhate, who was the finance manager of the 2017 census materials.
Census agents were satisfied with the decisions made. “We are happy and thank the president for having listened to our complaints and have sorted everything out. We are satisfied,” census taker Regina Munguambe said.

“I believe the satisfaction is for all of us, because the president has restored our motivation. We were working without motivation and without encouragement, but now we are satisfied and we are grateful for the president’s gesture,” census controller Adélia Fernandes added.

“Before, we weren’t getting anything, but from now on we will receive the daily food allowance and get the balance at the end. We will sign the contract and resume work tomorrow,” trainer Maria de Lurdes said.
Friday’s agreement saw the remunerations of trainers, census takers and controllers redefined and agreed upon, ending discontent among the KaMaxakeni municipal district census takers.
