Since the start of 2018 wild animals have killed seven people in the district of Zumbo in the central Mozambican province of Tete.
According to the district administrator, John Manhoso, crocodiles killed six of the victims with the other fatality caused by a hippopotamus. Crocodiles attacked and injured a further seven people. All the attacks occurred along the banks of the Zambezi River.
Wild animals also came into conflict with livestock owners. Zumbo revealed that hyenas and lions killed and devoured nine cows and 42 goats. In addition, hippopotami destroyed crops and damaged seven boats.
In reaction to this critical situation, local people have implemented measures to scare off dangerous animals and to kill those that continued to pose a danger to humans.
Manhoso explained, “we are warning people not to visit areas which are the habitat of these animals. These areas are well known and marked”. Fishermen are also encouraged to avoid the sections of the river frequented by hippos as they could attack their boats leading to a loss of life.
In addition, Manhoso pointed out “the breeding grounds for fish are always a scene of dispute between man and crocodiles. Therefore, we continue to warn people to be very cautious”.
In Tete province, the main areas of conflict between man and beast are in the districts of Zumbo, Mutarara, Moatize, Maravia, Magoe, Chifunde, and Tete city.
