Morrumbala district, in the south of Zambezia province, is considered a Renamo stronghold and one of the most problematic in Zambezia, from a political point of view.
Diário da Zambézia says that currently there are areas in the district under Renamo command, clearly belying Frelimo Central Committee’s statements that the government is in full control.
Last Friday 11 April, Morrumbala Administrator Pedro Fazenda Sampange visited the village of Pinda, in the Megaza area, where community leaders complained of armed Renamo men arriving at their homes telling them to leave the area or join Afonso Dhlakama’s party.
On pain of death, they said, the leaders surrendered their Frelimo government uniforms and other material possessions.
At the same rally, a Mecaula community leader whoalso happens to be a ‘Sapanda’ (traditional territorial chief ) reported that she had received call from one of her sons, saying that Renamo men had come to collect other uniforms that were at her house.
The Mecaula leader said she did not know what to do in the situation, and asked the government to address the problem as quickly as possible.
