A group of hairdressers from Janet Market, in the centre of Maputo, are at loggerheads with the market administration for allegedly preventing them from looking for customers outside the market.
The beauty salon professionals say that the location of the salons does not help business.
Many Maputo citizens work in Janet Market, some providing services – such as this group of hairdressers, who prefer to remain anonymous.
“What is happening here is that the administration is forbidding us to go out looking for clients. We are ladies, and we have homes and children, They [the police] only come here to harass us,” one woman says.
The hairdressers tell of embarrassing situations they have been subjected to, and are demanding justice.
“It’s normal to get clients here at the entrance of the market, but police says it’s theft,” our interviewee complains. “But this is a big market and we’re right at the back. Clients would never find us otherwise.”
They are angry with the market management over their apparently being against attracting customers.
Our reporting team will continue to investigate the real reason for the impasse.
