Weather Warning: Moderate to heavy rains, thunderstorm in central and northern Mozambique
Five individuals arrested on Saturday morning are being held in the Matola’s 2nd Police Station in connection with the attempted theft of building materials from a Construa warehouse.
One E. Lucas, 31 years old, named as the group’s ringleader, and accomplice Nelson, 26, climbed the wall of the property and tied up the guard on duty.
The criminals were targeting the safe supposedly containing a large sum of money but, having failed to remove the safe, set about stealing four drills, two welding machines, two trimming machines and a riveting machine.
Prior to his arrest, Lucas worked as a guard in security company outsourced by Construa and, in addition to having planned the robbery, was responsible for recruiting the others and transporting the materials.
It being up to Lucas and Nelson to find customers for the stolen goods, the pair approached two handcart scrap collectors, one of whom, Celso Antonio, 23 years old and a neighbour of Nelson’s in Matola “A” told Noticias that he had no idea that the material was the product of theft.
In the early hours of the morning the four individuals reportedly rented a ‘Chapa’ combi to go meet a customer, thus involving the driver of a Toyota Hiace registration ADL 148 MC, who likewise claims to have had no suspicion concerning the origin of the material he was carrying and maintains he was simply carrying out his lawful business.
A criminal case has been opened.
