Wedding party in Netia ends in tragedy

At least one person was killed and 88 injured, 15 of them seriously, at an Easter wedding party organized in the village headquarters of the Netia administrative post in Nampula’s Monapo district.
Administrative head Rasa Pereira told AIM that locally famous singers were due to perform at the wedding and, to get a better view, a number of the guests decided to climb a nearby mango tree.
The mango tree however could not bear the weight and fell over.
Rasa Pereira told AIM: “During the party, the tree fell over, injuring the people in the tree and those underneath it. One person died on the spot.”
According to the same person, prompt intervention by the authorities avoided a worse scenario. Many of the victims were evacuated to Monapo rural hospital, where some remained under medical care on Tuesday.
