The Africa Research Institute and Zitamar news invite all interested to a’A Webinar on Mozambique’s debt crisis’, going live on YouTube, tomorrow at 3pm.
Coming a week after the government failed to repay a $60 million coupon on its Eurobond, and ahead of an audit report into $2 billion of debts issued by Mozambican companies with sovereign guarantees, this promises to be an extremely timely discussion. Four panellists will contextualise the current crisis; and assess its implications for the government of Mozambique, the banking sector, and international financial institutions:
The discussion will be chaired by Tom Bowker, Editor at Zitamar News, with a written summary compiled by Nick Branson, Senior Researcher at Africa Research Institute. The webinar will be broadcast over YouTube Live, which allows participants to submit questions.

Marco was an early investor in the EMATUM bond, and participated in the swap in April 2016, before selling out of the bond when the latest restructure was announced in October 2016.
Roberto has more than 30 years’ experience as an economist, of which the last 18 in macroeconomic and public finance management in sub-Saharan African countries, while working for the World Bank, IMF, OECD, UNDP, bilateral donor governments and other agencies. During 2006 and 2007 he was embedded with the post-Taylor Liberian government as senior adviser to the minister of Finance. Most recently (2013-2015) he spent time with the IMF’s Southern Africa Regional Technical Assistance Centre (AFRITAC South, based in Mauritius) as resident macro fiscal adviser with a portfolio of thirteen Southern African countries. Now based in Maputo, Roberto is also a political activist and co-leader of a campaign to broaden participation in Mozambique’s peace process.
Anne leads Teneo Intelligence’s political risk research on Southern Africa, with a particular focus on South Africa and Mozambique. She advises corporate and financial sector clients on political and policy change – including a number of investors in Mozambique’s sovereign bond.
Joe has a long association with Mozambique where he worked as correspondent for the Guardian and the BBC during the 1980s. He was Policy Advisor for the Jubilee 2000 campaign to cancel developing country debt (1998-2000), has written seven books on Mozambique and reported on all of Mozambique’s multi-party elections, and is a respected authority on the concept of ‘odious debt’.
