Both southern and northern regions of Mozambique may experience moderate to heavy rains from today onwards. The weather forecast also points to a slight drop in temperatures, after days of intense heat.
Meteorologist Pedro Mutumane, from the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), explained that these conditions are associated with a low pressure system in Southern Africa, where hot air masses tend to flow towards the ocean.
The precipitation is also related to the entry of a high pressure system in the south of the country, plus an intertropical convergence zone in the north and climate change, despite the forecast of hot weather for the second half of the current rainy season.
Mutumane said that, from this Monday onwards, moderate rainfall is expected, with a tendency to become heavy, in Maputo, Gaza, the interior of Inhambane province, as well as in all provinces in the north. This could also affect the weather in Tete, Zambézia and Manica provinces in the centre of the country.
According to the same source, the rain should dissipate by the end of Friday.
Mutumane however noted that temperatures would be between 30 and 33 degrees, unlike last week, when temperatures were around 39 to 43 degrees.
The seasonal weather forecast for the period from January to May indicates a greater probability of normal temperatures and rainfall, with a tendency to be above normal throughout the country.
INAM reiterates the need for continuous monitoring and monthly updating of the forecast and urges everyone to follow the alerts and warnings issued regarding extreme weather events such as intense heat, rain, gales and atmospheric discharges associated with the 2024-2025 rainy season.
