The National Meteorological Institute (INAM) is forecasting unseasonably high temperatures in the province of Maputo today.
“Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we will have temperatures in excess of 30 degrees, which is not normal at this time of year, when temperatures tend to fall. Temperatures will peak today at 34 to 36 degrees,” INAM spokesperson Acácio Tembe said.
From tomorrow (Thursday), rains and winds of 50 or 60 kilometers per hour are expected.
“We will see the passage of a moderate frontal system, but this situation will cause winds with gusts up to 50 kilometres per hour. We will have thunderstorms, but they will be occasional, with rains that will last until the 7th (Women’s Day national holiday), when we expect rain throughout the day,” Tembe said.
The temperatures expected in Maputo will be general across the southern region, and in the center and north rain is expected.
“In the centre of the country, we will have occasional rainfall. However, where we do predict significant rainfall is in the northern zone. We are at the end of the rainy season and there is usually more precipitation in that region. We are talking about 20 to 30 millimeters of rain in the provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado and in the interior of the province of Niassa,” Tembe said.
INAM indicates that the winds forecast in the south are not considered strong but advised families living in shacks and fishermen going to sea on Thursday and Friday to take precautionary measures.
