Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) issued a warning today about strong winds reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour and waves up to 3.5 meters high in the southern part of the country, expected to last through Thursday. Authorities are urging caution.
The warning states that the weather phenomenon will affect several districts in the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane, as well as the cities of Maputo, Matola, Maxixe, and Inhambane, starting late this afternoon.
“Due to the occurrence of strong winds, precautionary and safety measures are recommended,” the warning reads. According to INAM, it is valid until midnight on September 25.
Additionally, the situation may impact maritime navigation, with waves reaching heights of up to 3.5 meters during the same period.
The warning emphasizes that maritime activities could be compromised and coastal infrastructure may be significantly affected.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely impacted by climate change globally, experiencing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
