Mozambique’s National Meteorological Institute (INAM) is forecasting intense heat, with maximum temperatures up to 36 or 38 degrees Celsius, for this Friday, which is Armed Forces of Defence of Mozambique Day.
NAM recommends “taking precautionary and safety measures, in view of the risk associated with intense heat, and avoiding crowding” to mitigate the risk of exposure to Covid-19.
In Maputo province, the intense heat will affect the districts of Matutuine, Boane, Namaacha, Marracuene, Moamba, Magude and Manhiça, and the cities of Maputo and Matola.
In Gaza, INAM forecasts a similar scenario in the districts of Chicualacuala, Massangena, Chigubo, Mabalane, Chibuto, Mapai, Chongoene, Mandlakazi, Bilene, Massingir and Guijá, and the cities of Chókwè and Xai-Xai.
“The same system will intensify in the province of Gaza and may progressively affect the provinces of Inhambane, Manica, Sofala, Tete and Zambézia, on the 26th, 27th and 28th, with maximum temperatures ranging from 38 to 42 degrees Celsius,” an INAM statement sent to ‘O País’ reads.
The situation will remain the same until Monday, with a “continuation of hot weather”.
INAM meteorologist Lelo Tayob warned yesterday that the country would experience high temperatures as a result of the beginning of summer in the southern hemisphere.
