The Mozambican National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) warned of the possibility of tropical cyclone Chido affecting northern and central Mozambique from Saturday.
According to a warning from INAM, the tropical system intensified during the morning of Wednesday and became a category 3 tropical cyclone, the third highest on a scale of 1 to 5.
Updated projections indicate that Chido continues to “intensify”, and may “start affecting the coastal and continental regions of Madagascar” from Friday.
“Projections also indicate that there is a strong possibility that the meteorological system will cross the northern region of Madagascar and enter the Mozambique Channel from 14/12/2024, potentially affecting the northern and central regions”, reads the INAM warning.

Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change in the world, cyclically facing floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
The 2018/2019 rainy season was one of the most severe in Mozambique’s history: 714 people died, including 648 victims of cyclones Idai and Kenneth, two of the largest ever to hit the country.
In the first half of 2023, heavy rains and the passage of Cyclone Freddy caused 306 deaths, affected more than 1.3 million people in the country, destroyed 236 thousand homes and 3,200 classrooms, according to official government data.
