Mozambique’s National Meteorological Institute (INAM) on Friday warned of “moderate to heavy” rainfall in the provinces of Zambezia and Sofala, in the centre of the country.
INAM predicts periods of moderate to heavy rains, temporarily intense, caused by the persistent influence of a low pressure system that is approaching the central region of Mozambique, the national weather bureau says in a statement.
The warning identifies eight districts in the province of Zambézia as “risk areas”, including Pebane, Maganja da Costa, Mopeia and the provincial capital, Quelimane.
In Sofala, there are five risk areas, with emphasis on Marromeu, Caia, Dondo and Beira, the provincial capital.
“On the other hand, the intertropical convergence zone will continue to influence the weather in the northern region of the country,” indicates INAM, going on to predict “significant volumes of precipitation” in Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces.
Mozambique is in the middle of its October-to-April rainy season, during which cyclones Chido and Dikeledi have already been seen affecting the north of the country.
On January 13, severe tropical cyclone Dikeledi hit Mozambique, causing at least 11 deaths and affecting another 250,000 people, according to the most recent official report from the Mozambican authorities.
Cyclone Chido, which hit Mozambique on December 14, caused the death of at least 120 people and affected another 450,000.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change in the world, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season.
