Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi declared on Friday that his government “will not allow the people to die without any protection”.
Speaking in the town of Manhica, some 80 kilometres north of Maputo, at celebrations marking the 27th anniversary of the General Peace Agreement signed in Rome on 4 October 1992 between the government and the Renamo rebels, Nyusi insisted that the government is not “distracted” but takes the insurgency in the northern province of Cabo Delgado very seriously.
He promised “we shall continue to urge the defence and security forces to defend the population to the last soldier”.
On the other hand, he added, this year 4 October is celebrated at a time in which the challenge of consolidating peace has been embraced. Harmony, he added, should be consolidated in words and in acts where democratic institutions and civil society bodies do their part to ensure that differences and conflicts are solved through dialogue.
“We are celebrating the day of peace, by paying tribute to all our fellow countrymen who gave and are continuing to give the best of themselves”, in order to build “a single, indivisible, secure and more democratic Mozambique in line with its cultural diversity and political pluralism”, he declared.
This year’s 4 October celebrations occur just a few days before general and provincial elections, scheduled for 15 October. “So we urge that the spirit of peace prevail throughout the entire electoral process, and at the end the country and the people emerge victorious”, said Nyusi.
