“If we come to a time when there is a dispute and so much antagonism that people do not believe each other, then it becomes necessary to take certain steps,” President Nyusi said at a joint press conference in Maputo with the Portuguese president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
Responding to a question about the possibility of Portugal engaging in crisis mediation with the Mozambican National Resistance movement (Renamo), the Mozambican president said that he had not heard of any “open availability” from President de Sousa, but noted that his Portuguese counterpart “is willing to give all kinds of help” to Mozambique.
But, according to Nyusi, before that it is necessary to resume talks with Renamo, “speaking first to understand the essence of what is happening, what is intended and, above all, how to proceed”. The president noted that “civil society, friends and neighbours, whether formally or not,” were already advising the Mozambican leadership.
“The Portuguese are available to offer all kinds of support whenever Mozambique needs – and it is not support for killing people,” he said.
