The outgoing German ambassador, Philipp Schauer, yesterday called on the government and Renamo to reestablish confidence between themselves as a matter of urgency, so as to achieve the understanding necessary to bring about peace and stability in the country.
Speaking in Maputo after a farewell meeting with President Nyusi at the end of his three-year tour, Schauer said he felt the fundamental problem delaying the end of military-political instability in the country was the lack of confidence.
“I think that the Mozambican government and Renamo, at this point, do not have much confidence in each other. So we are waiting for this trust to be rebuilt, as the basis for productive negotiations,” he said.
“The president assured me that his government is working on that, so we have confidence that there will be progress in this direction,” he said.
At a time when clashes are constantly being reported from the centre of the country, the German diplomat had a message for the government and Renamo.
. This is our message to the two parties. We do not believe that military means will produce positive results,” he said.
