Mozambique: Lenna Bahule is about to launch 'Kumlango' in Casa Velha, Maputo
Wazimbo and Yolanda Chicane from Banda Kakana (O País)
The musicians Wazimbo and Banda Kakana are starting an international tour that will take marrabenta to Canada, England, Portugal and South Africa.
The tour comes at the initiative of Wazimbo, who decided to return to the international stage to promote popular Mozambican music, particularly marrabenta. Wazimbo toured Canada, Portugal and Brazil, where he left an indelible mark.
“At the end of the tour it was clear to me that a new CD had to be launched, and I wanted a CD that was going to be explosive, a “maningue nice” CD, as we Mozambicans say, in order to share Mozambique’s musical history across the generations and present it to the public across our borders,” Wazimbo said.
Wazimbo turned his dream of promoting marrabenta to new heights into reality by joining up with Banda Kakana, who together will release the “Marrabentar” CD in Canada.
“With the Marrabentar CD, we propose to bring, with Uncle Wazi, a new approach in the great conversation about the old and new generations of Mozambican music, opening space for young people to have more pride in this rhythm, and for the world to discover other voices that the country produced after the independence,” Yolanda Chicane said.
Wazimbo says that Marrabentar is not just an album, but a way of telling the story, and revealing the cultural identity, of a country.
