The Maputo Commercial Institute has been forced to suspend classes due to a lack of water, caused by accumulated debts. The students were expecting to resume classes on Monday 15 July, but were informed by the institution that conditions for their return did not obtain.
A note in Miramar’s possession issued by the school explaining the situation says that classes have been suspended due to the impossibility of a safe and dignified resumption, without indicating when that might occur.
In a direct appeal to parents and guardians, the school asks that they honour a commitment they made on June 29 of this year to each contribute 500 meticais [per student] .
The amount [obtained after contributions] will be used to sink a water borehole in the school located in central Maputo, an emergency solution to overcome the crisis.
