The coronavirus state of national emergency is giving Maputo’s beaches a makeover – and one that the municipalities agree should be prolonged after the crisis.
It is an environmentally friendly state of emergency, and nature is grateful. The video report below showcases the new look of the beaches along Maputo’s coastal extension.
We found a barefoot Adnan Zequir practising his soccer tricks on the beach opposite the ATCM. He’s excited about the clean beach, contrasting it with the noise pollution and other impediments which previously spoiled his enjoyment.
The beach by the Marítimo club used to serve as a sort of drawcard for rituals associated with the spirit world, which only left behind a beach littered with clothes, animal parts and other objects devoted to the spirits. None of that today.
The Costa do Sol beach was the worst, especially on weekends and holidays.
Among other benefits, the new disposition has brought about a reduction in weekend cleaning overtime by city council workers.
