The United Nations Special Envoy on the El Nino weather phenomenon and on climate change, Macharia Kamau, on Wednesday urged the international community to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims of natural disasters in Mozambique, particularly of this year’s drought, largely caused by El Nino.
Kamau, who was speaking to reporters in Maputo, shortly after he was received by President Filipe Nyusi, put the number of Mozambicans in need of humanitarian aid at 2.5 million.
“The Mozambican people deserve more support from the international community”, he said. “There is a moral imperative which should imply a greater commitment in humanitarian aid”.
The UN envoy revealed that so far the international community has only provided half of a package of 200 million dollars of aid promised at the start of the year to support the victims of natural disasters.
Kamau added that the impact of climate change in Mozambique is serious, characterized by cyclical droughts and floods.
He is in Mozambique to see for himself the impact of the El Nino drought. During his four day visit he will tour the drought-stricken districts of Manhica and Magude in Maputo province, and hold meetings with the Mozambican relief agency, the National Disasters Management Institute (INGC).
Kamau arrived in Mozambique from Botswana as part of a visit to several southern African countries hit by drought.
