The prices of basic products have started to rise in Maputo’s main markets, possibly because of the turmoil created by the coronavirus pandemic, Miramar reports.
Coronavirus has not yet gained ground in Mozambican territory, and is currently under control in neighbouring countries, but it is nevertheless the source of the unrest that may be behind the price spikes in basic products in markets in the city and on the outskirts of Maputo.
Consumers claim they cannot afford the new prices, while salespeople also resent the hikes, reducing the flow of customers as they do.
Meanwhile, retailers are the feeling the pinch worst. Alfredo Mandlate sells sugar and cornmeal by the kilogram, but big orders are a thing of the past, he says, albeit a recent one.
Sellers of beans and peanuts have products sitting on their stalls since the day prices started to rise two weeks ago.
Meanhile, the National Inspection of Economic Activities says it is attentive to the prices of basic products and will control any opportunism arising from the fear of widespread coronavirus infection.
