Thousands of people took to the streets on Friday in the city of Beira, in central Mozambique, to accompany the funeral ceremonies of Daviz Simango, president of the municipality and leader of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM).
A procession passed through several neighbourhoods of what is historically the country’s second main city after the capital, Maputo, with half a million inhabitants.
Daviz Simango’s body lied in state in a precinct set up in Praça do Município and is being buried on Saturday at the Santa Isabel cemetery in the same city.
The president of the third parliamentary party of the Mozambican opposition died on Monday, aged 57, in South Africa, of an illness.
The Mozambican government passed a resolution on Tuesday for an official funeral.
According to information provided by the MDM, Simango suffered a cardiac arrest that caused his death, after being admitted to a South African health unit to where he had been transported due to a sudden illness on 13 February.
