Persistent water restrictions are obliging residents in the Matundo neighbourhood, Unidade Alberto Vaquina, to walk more than five kilometres to the Zambezi River in search of the precious liquid.
Images not only show the drama these residents experience, but also the risks they run – for the river is also home to numerous hippos and crocodiles.
While some wash their clothes and other utensils in the river, others on the opposite bank draw water for human consumption.
Residents say that, with both humans and animals using this single access point, conflict is frequent, with reports of at least one death in recent times.
Without recording a formal interview, the company Fundo do Investimento e Património do Abastecimento de Água (FIPAG) says it is investigating the situation and considering possible urgent intervention to resolve the problem.
