The Witbank supermarket, in Matola, has been the target of an armed robbery. In keeping with the times, however, the robber wore a coronavirus face mask to partially disguise his identity.
Video surveillance footage from the Witbank, Matola, establishment shows the man entering with a mask and a backpack . Wielding what is possibly a firearm, he holds up one of the tellers, unsuccessfully tries to fire a shot in the air, grabs a sum of money and quickly leaves the place.
Wearing a protective mask to cover the nose and mouth is a habit which the population has adopted to mitigate the spread of the virus, and one which this bandit took advantage of to stage his raid.
It is not yet known how much the robber escaped with, but the video footage will to some extent no doubt help the police identify him.
