The death toll in the tanker explosion in the town of Caphiridzange, Moatize district, Tete province, hit 100 yesterday, according to provincial hospital spokeswoman Veronica de Deus.
The number rose from 99 to 100 as a result of the death of another patient in Tete’s largest health unit.
“Although we have reported a death in the last 24 hours, patients’ clinical condition is tending to improve overall. So, very briefly, we expect to start discharging patients soon,” she said.
Veronica de Deus said that 23 patients had undergone surgery, seven of them children.
Meanwhile, the governor of Tete, Paulo Auade, announced that an association of agrarian producers would soon be established to support children orphaned by the explosion of the fuel tanker, which was en route from the Port of Beira in Sofala province to Malawi.
