Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi has extended the State of Emergency for another 30 days, to help curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country
The measures will now run until May 30.
Along with the extension of the state of emergency, Filipe Nyusi asked for more rigor in complying with the measures adopted, with the emphasis on the “creation of sanitary cordons to stop the spread of Covid-19” in the regions where the highest number of cases are registered.
He also called for “reinforcing the home quarantine and mandatory use of masks in all places of popular concentration”, as well as “limiting the internal circulation of people”.
Speaking in three of the commonest languages in the country, Nyusi called on Mozambicans to “stay at home”, reiterating the need to “limit public and urgent events like funerals to a maximum of 20 people”.
“The only purpose is to save human lives,” the president said
The noted that the initial state of emergency had not curtailed the movement of people, especially those who need to keep working so as to put food on the table, and therefore appealed urgently “to the informal sector for greater awareness of prevention measures. ”.
“We know that the measures are difficult for companies and workers, but this is the time to unite for a greater good,” President Nyusi said. “The Defence and Security Forces will continue to monitor to ensure compliance with the measures,” he warned.
The negative impact of the pandemic and the measures taken in the country’s economic sector had not gone unnoticed by the president, who said that his government was “doing everything [it could] to alleviate the consequences of the measures for companies”.
The head of state reiterated the call for the involvement of all Mozambicans in complying with the measures, saying “this pandemic can be defeated, but it requires our collective action, discipline and forbearance”.
Tribute to health professionals
President Nyusi preface his remarks by referring to health professionals as ” heroes in masks” and thanked all Mozambicans for having complied with the State of Emergency since March 30, when the country had just eight confirmed cases.
“A word of appreciation to companies which, despite the difficulties, continue to produce goods and services,” President Nyusi said. “The government concludes that, in general, the degree of compliance with the measures requires an effort by all Mozambicans.”
Despite the measures adopted, the country had, by Wednesday (29), recorded 76 cases of Covid-19, with nine people recovered.
There has, however, been an increase in local transmissions, particularly in Cabo Delgado province.
