Mozambique: Individuals invade private property in Bilene
Miramar
A seventy-year-old woman was allegedly physically assaulted, sexually abused and then killed on Saturday (July 8) night in Matola’s Ndlavela neighbourhood, by assailants still at large.
The victim, Catarina André Nhantumbo, lived in block 20 of the neighbourhood and sold cashew nuts in the area.
Around 7:00 p.m., a group of unidentified youths invaded her house and subjected her to ill-treatment before allegedly raping and killing her. Her humiliation included having her face smeared with ripe papaya.
Witnesses told @Verdade that they heard calls for help, but no one actually ventured into the house to find out what was going on.
When the screams continued, a neighbour approached the woman’s room but made no further progress because “the door was closed. I thought nobody was home and the screams I heard were false”.
The elderly woman was discovered dead the next day when one of her daughters visited her. Police in Maputo say they are investigating the death.
A young man was also killed by strangers in Maputo at dawn on Saturday, and his body found on the golf range in the Polana Caniço “A” neighbourhood.
Locals recognised him as a resident of block 40, but the reason for his death is not known. Residents surmise he was murdered while returning from work and his body dragged to the vicinity of his residence.
Some Polana Caniço residents said that another man was killed a few days ago, also in unclear circumstances and by unidentified individuals.
