The Bank of Mozambique called a press conference this Thursday to report on the rainwater leaking into its Chimoio, Manica, branch the day after it was inaugurated by the President of the Republic.
A team from the Bank of Mozambique’s Board of Directors took the journalists to the top of the building. They said that it was from there that the leak originated, because of a clogged water discharge pipe, the water running down into the auditorium and some offices and other rooms.
Nonetheless, no services were affected, Silvina de Abreu said.
“The gale and heavy rain did not cause any interruption in service at the Chimoio branch, whether regarding telecommunications, IT, water, energy services, or at the level of banking services and other specialties. In fact, services functioned normally on Monday [two days after the storm, and three after inauguration],” Silvina de Abreu said.
Since the day of the storm, staff from Soares da Costa Construction have been working day and night to address the problem that gave rise to the water leaking into the branch.
The central bank reiterated its position that the infrastructure was resilient to climate change.
“The Bank of Mozambique considers the infiltration of water into the auditorium and the deck, although undesirable, contributed to confirming the resilience of the Chimoio branch building, taking into account that it remained fully functional and providing the services for which was conceived,” De Abreu observed.
The transformation of the former Banco Nacional Ultramarino into the latest Bank of Mozambique branch cost 571 million meticais.
The central bank administrator also disclosed that the work guarantee period had been extended to 24 months from the 12 months previously agreed.
